Today I’m really pleased to introduce you to the lovely Jazmine O’Wilkes. Jazmine and I did our yoga teacher training together back in August. I remember that everyone wanted to have a mat near Jaz because of her collection of essential oils. If you felt tired in the mid afternoon Spanish heat, she’d be passing you over some peppermint or if the exam stress was hitting then some lavender was always to hand. I’ve wanted to get into aromatherapy, so reached out to Jazmine. The thought of knowing what essential oils to use for different moods, or how to make a skincare product feels quite appealing. I reached out to Jazmine for some tips, which she kindly has shared on here with you today.
Winter has a whole new definition to me this year. From Texas to South Carolina to Germany the weather has drastically changed from nonexisistent to overwhelming. Winter can be so majestic and joyous from cozying up inside to ice skating but, unfortunately, it also comes with the flu and the blues. Not only is the winter physically tough on the body and immune system, it is also emotionally trying.
This new year I am bringing in a bit of change and including some new healthy habits to my routine to enjoy the beauty of the winter and avoid the ugly it can bring. Dry skin, gloomy short dark days, and the germs -no thank you!
Essential oils are a wonderful start and are a staple in my household. You know how oranges are a good source of vitamin C, or that feeling of invigoration you get after taking a walk in nature? Both of those are great examples of the benefits of essential oils. Essential oils are aromatic plant compounds that are complex mixtures of naturally occurring chemicals stored in the leaves, stems, roots, and flowers of plants. Some of these chemicals are naturally antibacterial, antiparasitic, anti viral. Designed to protect plants from pests and disease, they support our bodies in the same way.
Below are some ways you can incorporate oils daily. They can help to boost your mood, strengthen your immune system, and help you power through the winter.
To scent a room, diffuse when feeling fatigued or low on energy. The menthol will give you a pick me up. When winter bugs hit, dilute a drop of peppermint oil combined with fractionated coconut oil and place under your nose to support open airways and help you breath easier. A fresh mint tea with honey can help to soothe a sore throat.
Oregano is one of the most potent and powerful essential oils and has been used for centuries. It is thought to be antibacterial, antiviral, anti fungal, antiseptic and anti parasitic. To apply topically, dilute just 1 drop in a little fractionated coconut oil and massage quickly into hands and feet to help warm the body.
Diffusing gives the double benefit of keeping the air germ-free whilst perking you up on a grey day. It can also make an all-purpose cleaner: mix 5-6 drops lemon essential oil with water and vinegar in a spray bottle. Use to clean kitchen counters and stainless steel appliances. For stainless steel, mix lemon essential oil with olive oil for best results. Also try making a lemon and honey tea.
