Staying Healthy whilst Travelling

Today’s guest post comes from Laura Wigley. Her ethos is finding balance and inspiring others to do the same. Head to her Instagram for her experiences in health, adventure and leadership.

Summer is approaching and hopefully you’re lucky enough to be heading on holiday. A great chance to get away, but also a potential challenge for balancing your adventures with a healthy lifestyle. Or you maybe you’re someone who travels for work. Struggling to strike a balance between life on the road, work events and your fitness goals.

That elusive balance is definitely realistic to find, but you have to be smart about it. Working in a global role, I travel most weeks. Initially, I found myself stuck in a rut. Feeling guilty whilst travelling because I wasn’t being as healthy as I wanted to be. Feeling frustrated. Knowing I wasn’t making the most of the places I was travelling to. Spending free time forcing myself to the gym. Compromising in the pursuit of healthier choices.

After some trial and error, I landed on my way of doing things. Using these tips, I’ve managed to find my balance. Embracing opportunities whist maintaining a healthy mind-set.

Be Honest With Yourself

What is the reason for your trip and what is a realistic fitness goal?

  • Having big plans to go to the gym every day or stick perfectly to your diet is sometimes never going to succeed. Don’t set yourself up to fail. If you’re away to enjoy yourself, have fun. Feeling guilty is just going to put a negative slant on your trip.
  • Vary your goals depending on the type of travel you are doing. What is realistic for a two-week relaxation trip is very different to a weekend city break. The extremes between plenty of free time trip and a jam-packed tourist agenda. A perfect example is my up-coming, three-day trip to Ibiza. I won’t be packing my trainers. I’ll plan rest days and bring my yoga mat for some sun salutations to keep my body moving. Win-Win. It’s all about planning a realistic balance and then sticking to it.

Combine Exploring with Fitness

You’re in a new city and wanting to explore. Kill two birds with one stone.

  • Put your trainers on take yourself for run. See and explore new things you would never on a tour bus. Or walk. It’s so easy to clock up miles visiting new attractions. With the added bonus that you’ll experience so much more if you slow down.
  • Is exploring on foot not for you? Hire a bike. In Milan, I met a business man who trained for Triathlon whilst travelling the world. A clever combination of google and Borris bikes gave him the chance to train and explore.
  • Or make fitness the attraction. Use Instagram or blogs to find the latest local fitness trends and classes. Try something completely new with your friends or meet other like-minded people by going on your own.

Make the Most of Mornings

We all know that the way you start your morning can set the tone for the day.

  • Get up and exercise before it’s too hot or you talk yourself out of it.
  • Take advantage of the breakfast buffet. Choose a healthy breakfast or fruit, natural yoghurt, eggs, cooked tomatoes, mushrooms or brown toast. Set your intention for the day.
